Analyzing, copying, and modifying a seashell.
Shells was a fairly short project meant mostly as an exercise to learn new software: Dassault CATIA.
I analyzed a seashell, parametrically modeled it using the program, and 3D printed the results.
Iteration 1. Each segment of the shell is geometrically similar to the last: the left side of each segment is the same size as the right side of the segment before it, resulting in a logarithmic spiral.
Iteration 2. Spines were added to each segment. Their size was parametrically derived from the dimensions of the segment they were mounted on.
Iteration 3, or at least what's left of it. Each segment was skeletonized, then a chain of rings was woven in and out of the resulting columns. The print was very fragile, and most of the pieced broke off while removing the support material.
